Charleston family at risk to lose their home

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – A family from Charleston is about to lose their home. The mother tries to get help but cannot get any money through government aid programs.

The mother owns a house through Habitat for Humanity. Since she is a homeowner, government assistance programs like 211 cannot offer her money or programs currently have no money. Now she asks if anyone can help.

As Donja Brown walks through her 12 year old house, she can’t help but think that she might not wake up in it much longer.

“I really don’t know what to do. I thought about maybe taking my kids and staying in the shelter, ”Brown said.

Brown has seven children, but she has four minor children who live with her in the house. Her children are seven, nine, 12 and 14. She currently only works part-time as she has to stay at home with her children due to the school closings during the pandemic.

“I get paid every two weeks and live on my income. My checks are $ 200 to $ 300 every two weeks, and I buy gas to get back and forth to work. I buy household items, ”said Brown.

Due to low income and unemployment, Brown has lagged behind on her mortgage and is struggling to pay the hefty utility bills, which are due to close later this month. She reached out to Habitat for Humanity and all she can do is set up a payment arrangement or extend her mortgage.

“I called the Union Mission, they just deliver food. I called Mountain Mission, they are out of money and can only give me $ 75 of that money. I spoke to DHHR, they can pay a month past due, but they won’t pay until I have the rest of the money, “Brown said.

Brown’s ex-husband, who does not want to be identified, volunteered to help build the house, and now this one too.

“It’s hard to swallow. It’s really. You know, hard times have just come and it’s just hard. Everything we worked for could possibly be gone, ”he said.

“I’m very worried and I’m scared I don’t know what to do. I’m just trying to get help, ”said Brown.

If you would like to help Brown and her family, she is open to suggestions.
