COLUMBIA, SC (AP) – Griff McGarry hit a season high of 10 in seven innings, and Virginia beat Dallas Baptist 4-0 in Sunday’s Columbia Super Regional second game.
The Cavaliers (34-25) improved to 5-0 in the NCAA tournament playoffs that year, forcing a crucial game 3 with the Patriots (41-17) on Monday for a trip to the College World Series.
Zack Gelof gave Virginia a 1-0 lead with Rhett Kouba (6-2) from Dallas Baptist, who led the eighth inning. Alex Tappen followed Kechely with an off-relief collar.
The Patriots’ Andrew Benefield ended McGarry’s no-hit offer with a lead-off double in seventh place. Virginia catcher Logan Michaels picked Benefield second after Ryan Wrobleski showed colorful. Wrobleski hit a single, moved up to second due to a fielding mistake, and stole third in the dirt, but McGarry ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
McGarry accompanied George Specht to lead eighth place and left the game after taking a moment in the dugout to see if he could do something about the bleeding on the ring finger of his beating hand. Brandon Neeck (2-0) finished the inning to take the win, and Kyle Whitten pitched ninth for his second save of the season.
