NORFOLK, Virginia (ODUSports.com) – ODU Athletics announced that there will be no traditional spring football game in 2021. The Monarchs will instead perform a modified intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m., which will air on ESPN Radio 94.1. ODU plans to allow the previous maximum number of participants of 1,000 viewers, made up of family members and friends of the team and the staff, the administration as well as ODU students, bands and ghost teams.
The recent relaxation of capacity constraints does not leave enough time to prepare the stadium and campus for an event that can accommodate up to 6,000 spectators. Significant changes to stadium operations would include staff increases, the availability of toilets, concessions, social distancing and other security measures.
Capacity restrictions for indoor and outdoor sports and entertainment venues within the Commonwealth have recently eased, and ODU Athletics is optimistic that attendance numbers will be positive for the fall football season.
“We don’t want to give our fans a sub-par experience on their first trip back to SB Ballard Stadium since 2019. We’re focused on welcoming our fans back this fall and providing a lively matchday environment with numerous fans in the stands. The first home game against Hampton will be a celebration of everything we enjoy about ODU football and the highly anticipated first home game under head coaches Ricky RahneGuide. I’m expecting a crowd at SB Ballard Stadium on September 11th, “said ODU Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig.
A radio broadcast of the Scrimmage will be available on ESPN Radio 94.1, presented by the Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group. Voice of monarchs, Ted Alexanderand Andy Mashaw will be on the phone from 11am. The program will contain exclusive coach and player interviews that will be spread throughout the show. A full post scrimmage summary will be available on www.odusports.com, including the head coach’s comments after the game Ricky Rahneand a highlight role of the scrimmage. Fans can also follow the action in ODU’s new in-game app “ODU Sports 360”, which is available on iPhone and Android.
