James Schenck, President / CEO of PenFed Credit Union and CEO of the PenFed Foundation, worked in a PenFed facility in Alexandria when he saw the news of the 9/11/2001 attacks. Schenck and several volunteers walked six miles to the PenFed financial center at the Pentagon to see how they could help the team and others who were immediately affected.

“As we walked towards the Pentagon, I will never forget what we saw: After the attacks, we saw the best of America – the selflessness and courage of the American people who moved towards the burning Pentagon building to help others by To help survive, ”said Schenck in his remarks. “These brave Americans weren’t just first responders and military personnel; they were ordinary civilians who were in the area, coming out of the Pentagon City Mall, stopping their cars on South Hayes Street, and heading for the burning Pentagon to do whatever they could to help. “

All staff at the PenFed Financial Center in the Pentagon were safely evacuated on September 11th, and the credit union resumed operations the next day to provide continued service and support to the Pentagon community.

“That morning we were on a unilateral mission and if it was successful we would not be returning. We had failed. The passengers on Flight 93 are the real heroes,” said keynote speaker Heather “Lucky” Penney, to American heroine and renowned speaker, best known for her service as an F-16 fighter pilot on September 11th. “I’ve learned that heroism is not unique or possessed by a select few. The passengers on Flight 93 proved this, as did the people who helped each other just before the towers collapsed.”

Retired Army General John W. Nicholson Jr., President of the PenFed Foundation, moved into a new home that day. His desk in the Pentagon was 30 meters from where the plane’s nose hit the building. “Everyone between my desk and the plane perished. You don’t forget something like that. It stays with you forever. What I do every day, I do now in honor of the people we have lost,” he said during his remarks.
