While the July 4th weekend is sure to add some pop to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, its third year PGA Tour event just added real firepower.
Phil Mickelson, who wowed the sporting world last weekend by becoming the oldest great champion in golf history Winning the PGA championship committed at the age of 50 to attend this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, which will take place July 1-4 at the Detroit Golf Club.
“Phil is one of the greatest players of all time, an electric performer, and continues to be a huge draw for fans who attend PGA TOUR events, as evidenced by his record performance at the PGA Championship last weekend,” said Jason Langwell . Together with Mickelson, the great championship winners Patrick Reed and Webb Simpson announced their commitments to join the 156-player field together with Sungjae Im, Max Homa and Kevin Kisner, who are each in the top 50 of the golf world rankings.
The latest commitments are added to a field that already contains Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, 2015 PGA Championship winner, Jason Day, two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson and Rocket Mortgage Ambassador Rickie Fowler.
This will be Mickelson’s first appearance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but the fan favorite was a regular at the Buick Open, which was played at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc until 2009. A winner of 45 PGA Tour events in his career, Mickelson added his sixth major on Sunday when he held Brooks Koepka back on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course to win by two strokes.
Mickelson has now won the PGA championship twice, along with three Masters titles and one win at the Open Championship. He’ll be shooting for the Career Grand Slam next month when he plays at the Torrey Pines in San Diego at the US Open June 17-20. Mickelson is one of 12 players in golf history to win three of the four majors. A win at Torrey Pines would make him the sixth golfer to win the career Grand Slam.
Reed is the eighth player in the world and won The Masters in 2018. After finishing fifth in the first Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2019, Reed missed the cut a year ago. Reed, one of the most controversial players on the tour, had some of his greatest moments at team events like the Ryder Cup.
Simpson, who has seven career wins, is the 2012 US Open Champion who made his Detroit debut last year and finished eighth with a tie.
Also for 2021, Kisner will return, who finished third behind DeChambeau and Matthew Wolff last year. The three-time winner is number 47 in the world. Im, the 23rd player in the world who finished 17th in the PGA Championship last weekend, has also signed up, along with Homa, who is currently 23rd in the FedExCup rankings, and Cameron Champ, who is in won in the last two years and finished 12th in the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Tickets for this year’s event will be available from 8:00 a.m. on Thursday RocketMortgageClassic.com. General admission is possible for the Pro-Am on June 30th and for all four days of the competition from Thursday, July 1st to Sunday, July 4th.
