This is the best way to support students!
Virginia State University (VSU) will waive student account balances for students enrolled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The grio reported.
The university recently announced that it is giving credits to students enrolled during the pandemic by using funds they receive through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) law.
The law was passed in March 2020 and provides $ 2 trillion in economic funds to support economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Almost $ 31 billion of that money went to schools. Since then, VSU has used the funds to improve the air quality at the school, buy necessary equipment for staff, and give scholarships to students in need when the school closed in March. The school will offset credits for all students who have taken classes from March 13, 2020 through the spring semester of 2021.
“We care about our students and their academic success, and we want to offer them the privilege of moving forward with zero records. We believe that the relief from these balances will provide the much-needed relief that will allow our fellows to focus more on their academics and degree, ”said Donald Palm, Probst and Senior Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs.
The HBCU will extend the forgiveness to all VSU credits after federal, state, and private grants are applied. The balance waiver does not include third-party loans. VSU joins other HBCUs like Virginia Union that used CARES Act funds to cancel student debt, and VUU announced last June that it would be allocating $ 6.3 million to student debt relief.
VSU student James Ricks said he was grateful that the school kept paying it when students need it most.
“We didn’t know how to react [the pandemic], especially from a student perspective. We’ve been taking face-to-face classes our entire lives so we didn’t know how to react for this pandemic to hit the full narrative and the whole perspective we are in virtual changes very rarely depending on where we are from, of course … I see this as a reward and recognition … We pulled it off, “said Ricks.
🚨All students who meet the criteria in the balance announcement will be deleted within the next 7 days.
